52comics [22]: Nimona

written and illustrated by: Noelle Stevenson
published by: Harper Collins

Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren’t the heroes everyone thinks they are.
But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona’s powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.

Another comic that i enjoyed more than i anticipated.
The story might sound familiar to a certain degree, but the characters and the world they inhabit is so wondefully crafted that one only has the choice to like it. The world reminded me a bit of Masters Of The Universe with its blend of science and sorcery, and the characters, Bannister Blackheart in particular (for me he sounds a bit like Dr. Orpheus from The Venture Borthers) have a unique voice to them.
I must admit that the art is a thing i have to get used to. It was a thing that bothered me on Lumberjanes for a bit, but if you take it as it is, and i have no idea if it was intended that way or not, your brain starts to add stuff. That is a trick i dig. And the same happens to the backstory of the world Nimona inhabits, instant fanfiction mode.
I had a blast with this comic. It is a fast read, but worth the time and money.

You can get it at The Bookdepository.
